About Textile Waste Solutions
Our operation in action at our factory location.
Textile Waste Solutions is dedicated to the philosophies of thinking outside the landfill and saving the world, one piece of trash at a time. Since its founding by Christopher Mkpado in 1995, Textile Waste Solutions has recycled tens of millions of pounds of textiles.
Through collaborations with the City of Santa Maria and local thrift stores, agencies, non-profits, retail stores and manufacturers, Textile Waste Solutions has learned that the recycling of discarded textiles requires an integrated approach to be effective. Thanks to a partnership with the City of Santa Maria, we have a significantly reduced the numbers of textiles that would otherwise have ended up in landfills. Since this initiative began in 2005, an average of 1.2 million pounds per year of textiles have been recycled in Santa Maria. In the near future we hope to bring that average up to 2 million pounds per year in Santa Maria, as well as beginning a new program with the City of Santa Barbara that would recycle another 2 million pounds of textiles per year, bringing the average total of textiles recycled for Santa Barbara County up to 4 million pounds per year.
In addition to working to extend the life of local landfills by diverting textiles to being reused and recycled, Textile Waste Solutions also works to keep jobs in local communities and to educate the public about the importance of recycling all usable items. We have an educational outreach program with the Santa Maria public schools and plans are in the works for a public television program about the benefits of recycling.
